COSMETIC DENTISTRY:Creating smiles that glow!

Porcelain Veneers:

When the color or shape of a tooth or teeth needs to be corrected a custom made porcelain veneer, similar to a fake fingernail is fabricated from a mold of the patients teeth. The laboratory is instructed as to what the final shade (color) is needed and what is desired as to shape and contour. When the veneer is returned, it is bonded to the tooth with tooth colored cements.

Case 1:

Malposed lateral incisor that appeared dark due to its position. A single porcelain veneer was placed on the lateral incisor to change its position.

Direct Bonding:
Diastemia Closure: Closing gaps between teeth

When the teeth are smaller in width than the available jaw size or teeth have drifted gaps may be present between the teeth. This can be unesthetic to some people. Although, some famous people have made a living flashing their gaps. We all can't be Lauren Hutton, Bert Parks or Arnold Schwartzneger. An alternative to porcelain veneers may be direct bonding. This involves placement of the tooth colored composite material over the teeth around the space to widen the teeth and eliminate the gap.

Case 1:

Replacing Old Silver Fillings with A Direct Composite:

Before: cracks were evident in the second premolar (2nd tooth from the left)

The old filling was removed demonstrating the remaining tooth left to support the new filling

After: A direct composite (Prodigy Condensable from Kerr was placed to restore the tooth to normal function.

Cervical notching (Abfraction) Repair:

Before: Abfraction type lesions can be seen on the 1st molar, 2nd premolar and 1st premolar.

After: A resin reinforced glass isonomer(Fugi II LC from GC America) was placed in the abfractions to restore the form and function of these teeth.

Repairing Old Acrylic to Gold Crowns:

Before

After

(Metal and acrylic were abraided with a microetcher, Panavia F was applied to the exposed metal and acrylic, this was followed by an application of Prodigy composite.)

Esthetic Improvement of Recession Associated with Old Crowns:

Exposed roots are noted on the six anterior crowns in this patient.

The exposed root is cleaned with a microetcher and aluminum oxide. This was followed by application of ED-Primer (J. Morita) and Panavia F (J. Morita). This picture illustrates application to the root surface and cervical porcelain to achieve a bond between the composite, root and porcelain.

Completed repair was accomplished by applying Prodigy (Kerr) over the Panavia F, followed by polishing. Note the greatly improved esthetics compared to the first picture.

Esthetic Improvement of Worn facing on an old acrylic to gold crown & replacement of a defective filling.

An old acrylic to gold crown present on the premolar over its 30+ years of service had developed wear of the tooth colored facing. Additionally, the cuspid (canine) presented with recurrent decay adjacent to an old composite.

Before

After

Completed repair was accomplished on the premolar crown by microetching the acrylic and gold. A thin layer of M-Bond (morita) was applied over the exposed metal and acrylic. This was then overlayed with Simile (Pentron) to complete the repair. The defective composite was removed from the canine. A base of Fugi II LC (GC America) was placed on the deepest portions to insulate the pulp. This was followed by etching and application of Bond 1 adhesive (Pentron) and overlayed Simile. Note the greatly improved esthetics compared to the first picture.
